Description

The City of Yellowknife will develop a Community Energy Plan (CEP) to reduce its overall energy usage and dependence on fossil fuels, reduce associated environmental impacts, and reduce the economic burden of purchasing imported energy. The CEP will result in recommendations on energy use at three system levels: energy used in City of Yellowknife infrastructure and operations, energy used within municipal boundaries by the entire community, and energy used outside the municipal boundaries, but still related to operations at the municipal level. The CEP will recommend also that the City use a combination of tools (e.g. - taxes, incentives, zoning, by-laws, building permits and policy planning) to achieve specific GHG reduction targets over the next ten years. The primary anticipated environmental benefit of this project is a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The City of Yellowknife’s Community Energy Planning Committee has set interim GHG reduction targets of 20 per cent for municipal operations and 6 per cent for community-wide activities over the next 10 years. This translates into an annual reduction of 22,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2015.
