Description
The City of Prince Rupert is one of the few remaining cities in Canada that discharges raw sewage into its harbour. The City’s Sewage System Upgrading Plan submitted to the Ministry in 2004, recommended that the City undertake a Liquid Waste Management Plan (LWMP) to address the complex issues involved in wastewater management decisions over the coming decades. This study will lay the foundation for a LWMP to guide the City of Prince Rupert, Environment Canada, and the provincial Ministry of Environment for decades to come. The ultimate result will be an improvement in marine water quality as the City moves away from the dumping of raw sewage into Prince Rupert harbour. Implementation of the LWMP will lead the municipality toward major improvements in the management of its liquid waste. Levels of both biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids are expected to improve dramatically. The City will also benefit because many of the old sewer lines will have to be replaced by a newer, more reliable sewer system. In areas of the City where the combined system will be separated, the remaining sewer line will have lower flows which will allow for more expansion in the City without having to increase pipe capacity.
