Description
This project will develop a Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) for the eight participating communities and Parks Canada. All recyclable waste materials will be collected and brought to a recycling depot where they will be sorted. The depot will serve eventually as a transfer station when the provincial waste management authority and a regional waste management system are implemented for the whole western region. Synergies will be sought between tourism, education, health, social welfare and economic development. By treating waste as a resource, the Towns will be stimulating the creation of new jobs in recycling, reuse and other sectors. Environmental performance targets include 1) a decrease of 50 per cent of solid waste disposed in landfill sites through waste reduction and diversion by increasing the beverage container recycling to 80 per cent (paper, cardboard and plastics recycling and community-wide household composting); 2) a 50 per cent reduction in greenhouse gases through the diversion of solid waste and the enactment of disposal bans on hazardous household products, and; 3) the elimination of seagull, bear and rodent problems at the site by implementing a safer trench burying system.
