Description

Based on a feasibility study, Gatineau wants to build a permanent eco-centre to meet its citizens’ growing need to dispose of their construction and dry waste materials sustainably. Located in the environmental industrial park, this new building, accessible by car or bicycle, will enable citizens and small business owners to dispose of their dry materials, household hazardous waste, and construction/renovation waste. The staff at the eco-centre will be responsible for sorting the materials for proper reuse, recycling or composting. Gatineau plans to divert at least 5,000 metric tons of waste in the first year. With this project, Gatineau will achieve a landfill diversion rate of 50% for all residential waste generated in its territory, move closer to the objectives of its waste management plan, avoid transportation of this waste to the current landfill site and increase the site’s service life.
