Description
GMEF 5495 confirmed that the construction of a three megawatt (MW) landfill gas (LFG) utilization facility at the Eastview Landfill site is technically and economically viable. The scope of this capital installation project includes the construction and commissioning of the facility as an addition to the existing LFG flare system, which will act as a backup when the LFG utilization facility capacity is exceeded or taken off line for repair and maintenance. The new system will use efficient reciprocating engines to generate three MW of power. The Government of Ontario will purchase the power at a fixed rate for 20 years as part of its renewable energy purchase program. When the new LFG utilization facility is commissioned, it will have the capacity to utilize 1,700 m3/hr and flare 1,360 m3/hr of LFG, resulting in a potential annual reduction of 185,000 tonnes of direct CO2e emissions. The indirect CO2e emission reduction from avoided fuel use results is an additional 10,200 tonnes/year if natural gas is the displaced fuel or substantively more if coal is used for comparison.
