Description

The Village of Buena Vista will conduct a feasibility study for the design of an improved community sewage system that will address the environmental issues caused by the current system of individual septic tanks and a shared lagoon. These issues include noxious fumes from septic tank pumping, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from trucks that empty septic tanks, leaks from septic tanks to groundwater and surface water bodies, overflow from the current undersized lagoon to groundwater and surface water bodies, and GHG emissions from evaporative lagoon wastewater treatment. After installing a central sewage system and green wastewater treatment facility, the village expects that vacuum trucks will no longer need to remove sewage from individual septic tanks, resulting in a 100 per cent reduction in GHG emissions and 80 per cent less road damage. It is expected that the new wastewater treatment would lead to a 60 per cent reduction in biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended soils reduction from 25 milligrams per litre (mg/L) to 10 mg/L. Water consumption would decrease by 20 to 25 per cent through reuse of treated water.
