Description

The City of Toronto and the Toronto Police Service (TPS) will build a new TPS Training Facility, targeting LEED Silver certification guidelines by achieving 43.5 per cent estimated annual energy savings relative to the Model National Energy Code for Buildings. The new facility, to be built in Etobicoke on approximately 6.67 hectares of former industrial land, prominently features renewable geothermal energy from 140 wells 122 metres deep that will fill most of the heating and cooling needs. Heat-recovery units will be installed on air-handling units, and all mechanical equipment will be very energy efficient. The thermal performance of the building envelope, with its low-E windows, will reduce seasonal heat loss and heat gain. Lighting controls will reduce electricity consumption. Overall, these measures will lower energy consumption from an estimated 62,000 GJ to 35,000 GJ annually. The site and location are an important aspect of the overall sustainability of this project. The soil and groundwater on site has been remediated based on the risk assessment plan. Moreover, by locating close to public transportation and providing secure bicycle storage and hybrid vehicles for employee use, the new facility will encourage greenhouse gas emission reductions from the use of alternative transportation. The project is strongly linked to the City's Environmental Plan ? Clean, Green and Healthy: A Plan for an Environmentally Sustainable Toronto ? regarding land and sustainable energy use. Finally, the TPS will pursue a LEED Innovation in Design credit, implementing a program to educate the public about the facility’s green features.
