Description

The former City Works Complex site in the Rosemont District of Montreal occupies an area of approximately 40,000 square metres (m2) and has been vacant since operations were moved in 2005. The City of Montreal has already completed a site remediation program and is proposing to build 450 new housing units on the site; 125 of which will be dedicated to social housing. In partnership with the City of Montreal, Coteau vert will prepare a sustainable development concept plan for the 125 social housing units - Les Ateliers d’Habitation Saine. An Integrated Design Process (IDP) will be used to develop recommendations for the project and prepare a preliminary conceptual plan for the residential development. The approach will be based on the Net Zero Energy Healthy Housing (NZEHH) initiative developed by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). This initiative is based on five major principles which guide the design and construction of sustainable homes and communities: Health, Energy, Resources, Environment and Affordability. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, drinking water consumption, wastewater production and the production of solid waste by using integrated infrastructure strategies. It is estimated that the sustainable design and construction of the housing units based on the IDP will generate 157 tonnes less of CO2 per year than a traditional design and construction.
