Description

This transit enhancement study will help the Town of Gibsons assess and select an environmentally conscious alternative - such as, fixed route/rail services (trolleys or trams) and community shuttle services (buses) - to improve public transportation in the Town. This would reduce the population’s high reliance on motor vehicles; give residents and visitors easier access to the Town’s commercial districts and to major public areas; improve in-town liveability and provide a much needed physical and psychological link between the two shopping districts of Lower and Upper Gibsons, which are separated by a steep (20-25 per cent grade) hill. In addition, reduced traffic congestion and a lower demand for parking will help maintain the Town’s small village character and natural beauty, even with the expected doubling of the area’s population by 2020. An enhanced local transportation system will also integrate the Town's newly adopted Trail and Cycle Network Master Plan, making it more accessible and viable to the public. Annual pollutant reductions are projected to reach 480 tonnes for GHGs (mainly CO2, CH4 and N2O), 20 tonnes for CO and 2 tonnes for NOx.
