Description
The Township is replacing six kilometres of water mains, fire hydrants, and appurtenances (valves, air release etc.). It is also installing water meters. The objective is to reduce the existing water consumption from 350 cubic metres per day to 285 cubic metres per day – a 20 percent reduction. The Township estimates that the water meters will provide for a 10 percent reduction, while the new pipes will reduce consumption by a further 10 percent. Replacing the pipe and installing the water meters will also help residents correct wasteful practices. Corrective measures include: replacing leaky taps and faucets within households; filling pools with untreated water; and, keeping water running continuously in the house during winter to prevent freezing of shallow-buried pipes. In addition, this project will: reduce the potential threat of groundwater contaminating the distribution system each time there is a pipe break; reduce the concentration of trihalomethanes to achieve the Ontario Drinking Water Standard criteria of 100 ug/L; provide fire protection throughout the distribution system; and, create the equivalent of 50 person/years of labour.
