Description

The City of Hamilton has completed Phase One of the Building a Strong Foundation (BASF) process: the initial step in addressing the infrastructure, policy and program changes required to make Hamilton a sustainable community. This study, built on the renewed Vision 2020 statement, represents Phase Two. It involves community consultation and training sessions to review the goals, implementation framework and indicators set in Phase One; a definition of a process to develop evaluation criteria for the Growth Related Integrated Development Strategy (GRIDS) process; an investigation of a series of development options based on the nine established in Phase One; the development of a triple bottom line (TBL) assessment tool and the analysis of planning options using TBL accounting. The outcome will be a final list of recommendations and an implementation plan. As a whole, planning targets include reductions of 20 per cent to the City’s current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and six per cent to municipality GHG emissions. compared to 2005 figures. Other targets include a zero loss of agriculture land; a lowering of electrical usage (currently rising); a diversion rate of 65 per cent of solid waste by 2008 and continued lowering of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitric oxide (NO 2).
