Description

As a member of Partners for Climate Protection (PCP), the Strait-Highlands Region (SHR) has committed to reducing its carbon dioxide emissions. This planning study will assist the Strait Highlands Regional Development Agency complete PCP milestones 1 to 3, resulting in the creation of a greenhouse gas (GHG) Local Action Plan (LAP) for corporate and community emissions within the SHR. A key challenge of the planning process is to broaden and deepen the collective understanding of sustainable development in order to advance and implement innovative solutions. A community this size in Nova Scotia emits approximately 503,394 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year. Based on a modest estimate of 20 per cent GHG reduction, the SHR is expected to save 100,679 tonnes CO2e if the LAP is implemented. Additional benefits will likely include a decrease in water consumption and a reduction in various chemicals now entering the community.
