Description

The Town of Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs will establish a watershed management plan for all of the lakes within its territory to reduce pollution and comply with Quebec’s National Water Policy. The town will consult with residents and help them understand the environmental effects of blue-green algae, establish a sampling and analysis program, and determine the volume of phosphorus. Efforts will also be made to protect and reforest buffer strips along the river, prohibit the use of fertilizers, pesticides and motorboats, and inspect septic tanks. The plan will prevent massive proliferation of blue-green algae, stop the rise in phosphorus levels and prioritize preventive action and measures. It will also enable the town to more effectively target awareness-raising campaigns and to increase the frequency with which lake water is tested. Through these efforts, the town expects that the watershed from which residents draw their water will improve in quality and become safer each year.
