Description

Currently, 80 per cent of the population of the Municipality of Grand-Saint-Esprit draws water from municipal wells and 20 per cent draws water directly from private wells. No protection measures are in place to ensure the quality of the groundwater and no treatment is performed on municipal water prior to distribution. Since water quality is known to be extremely variable across the municipality, Grand-Saint-Esprit will identify options to ensure that all residents obtain high quality drinking water and actions for the protection of the water quality throughout the watershed. The geographical extent of the watershed supplying the Municipality’s wells will be determined, water quality analyses will be conducted, actions to protect the sensitive areas within the watershed will be identified, and water conservation and distribution within the municipality will be examined. Water meters will be installed in residential and commercial establishments as a water conservation measure. In addition to environmental benefits, the Municipality of Grand-Saint-Esprit expects that project implementation will result in important social and economic benefits to the community including the mitigation of health risks associated with untreated water from an unprotected source. It expects that the project will result in a water supply that surpasses provincial drinking water quality guidelines.
