Description
In early 2003, Mississauga Transit undertook the development of a business case for the deployment of a multi-facetedintelligent transportation system (ITS) to improve customer service, increase ridership and decrease operating costs. The combination of technologies included: Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), Automatic Passenger Counters (APC),Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS), Vehicle Maintenance Monitoring Systems and Traffic Signal Preemption. This SmartBus project is the first Canadian example of these technologies integrated into one field test. Itsinnovation will create an industry standard for each component that will allow application in other transit operations. It isestimated that full implementation could generate $200,000 in annual savings from increased fare box revenue, decreased customer complaints, increased efficiency of snow removal and improved salt management.
