Description
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority will develop an eco-industrial park framework for over 12,000 hectares of land zoned for industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) use that include Toronto Pearson International Airport and adjacent areas. The strategy will focus on public–private partnerships between businesses, governments and community organizations, and will serve as a sustainable community plan focused on improving the ICI sector’s environmental impact. Through the use of sustainability indicators, the plan will assess baseline levels of energy and water use, waste production and land use, while also setting targets for improvement in these areas. A series of workshops, administered by a steering committee and an external consultant, will in turn target the business community, municipal staff, and accommodation industry. The plan will lay the groundwork for eco-industrial capital projects in the areas of transit, wastewater treatment, waste-to-energy initiatives and brownfield redevelopment.
