Description
The Bassin de Laprairie Water Treatment Board’s water treatment plant produces approximately 28,000 tonnes of residual sludge yearly from a prolonged aeration activated-sludge treatment process after which the sludge is transported 100 kilometres to a landfill for disposal. This study addresses the feasibility of reducing the amount of transported and landfilled sludge by assessing the potential of recycling and reclaiming the sludge and transforming it into a value-added product. For example, the study will examine using waste heat from the local cement factory to dry the sludge to ready it for use as an agricultural fertilizer or to produce energy and raw material (ashes) for cement production as a result of incineration. In total, it is estimated that an alternative solution could divert approximately 28,000 tonnes of unstable organic sludge from the landfill. This would reduce the risk of contaminants leaching into the water table and would completely destroy pathogenic organic materials. In addition, ashes produced by incineration would be neutralized through the cement production process.
