Description
The Association of Francophone Municipalities of New Brunswick (AFMNB), in partnership with the Municipality of Saint-Quentin and eleven other municipalities (Bas-Caraquet, Dieppe, Edmundston, Kedgwick, Lamèque, Petit-Rocher, Richibucto, Rogersville, Saint - Léonard, Shippagan, Tracadie-Sheila) will be carrying out a climate mitigation study to assess the feasibility of introducing a regional car sharing system for electric vehicles in New Brunswick. The objectives of the initiative are to reduce GHG emissions by introducing electric car-share vehicles into municipal fleets as well as establishing electric service stations. Establishing electric service in each municipality would create a green route where electric vehicles could be charged at multiple stations and therefore travel longer distances. Municipal employees would reserve and use the electric vehicles for their needs during work hours, and when not in use by municipal employees, the electric vehicles would be made available for external users in the community. The study will consist of first collecting and analyzing data to evaluate the technical and financial feasibility of implementing this project in twelve municipalities in New Brunswick. Consultations are planned with relevant stakeholders in each of the 12 municipalities to discuss the data collected, the potential for car-sharing and establishing electric service stations, to validate the results, and for municipalities to decide if they will participate in the project. Project monitoring will be carried out using performance indicators, and a final report will be prepared with the results for each municipality. The results and knowledge gained through the feasibility study will be shared at a local and regional level. The environmental, social and economic objectives of the SAUVéR project include: reducing GHG emissions, providing a car-sharing service communities with little or no public transportation or taxi services, optimizing the use of municipal vehicles, reducing the size of municipal fleets, reducing transportation and fuel costs, creating a sense of community, creating a tourist attraction, and promoting smart and green technologies. The ultimate goal of the project is to establish a functional base for a green electric route in New Brunswick and Quebec. This innovative project will support rural development in New Brunswick as this could be become a tourist attraction and the creation of a green electric route will demonstrate the benefits of electric cars and car-sharing to the public.
