Description
The City of La Prairie, located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River and part of the Montréal Urban Community, is composed of an eastern agricultual zone and a western urban zone along the river. However, due to the new Autoroute 30, the city must decide which types of development to prioritize while preserving its natural green spaces. The city therefore decided to create a sustainable development plan to give it a vision and development criteria adapted to the community, and to equip La Prairie to participate in Greater Montréal’s regional considerations. To carry out this plan, La Prairie used a two-tiered approach: reinforcing the ability to integrate sustainable development into its activities and decision-making processes; and developing an action plan for sustainable development based on public consultation and engagement. This process will help the city in tackling future major issues with more flexibility while taking into account the envirionmental and socioeconomic aspects. This project will also foster more open and cross-cutting management. Other communities may wish to develop their own plan based on La Prairie’s experience, as well as to use the diagnostic and public consultation tools developed for this project.
