Description

The City of Chilliwack planned to complete an air quality, energy and greenhouse gas action plan to address municipal and community-wide activities. The plan aimed to establish initiatives and regulatory tools to improve air quality and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The project team reviewed government regulations, created a vision statement, and developed goals, targets and indicators. It then identified key actions that could help the city achieve those targets. The team analyzed the potential actions and prioritized them based on relative benefit, level of effort, contribution to the triple bottom line (economic, social and environmental outcomes) and life-cycle considerations. The team obtained feedback through strategic consultation with various municipal departments, external agencies and stakeholders. Once the preferred actions were confirmed, the team developed implementation tools as well as a performance monitoring program. The resulting action plan included recommended initiatives involving various municipal departments, the general public and certain sectors of the community. The action plan formed an important part of the City’s Environmental Strategic Plan, which was developed at the same time.
