Description
The City of Kingston will build its first building constructed to a LEED™ standard, following the 2004 City Council adoption of a policy requiring a LEED™ assessment for all new building construction and large retrofit designs. A multi-disciplinary approach and energy modeling process was used in the design of the building - a police facility located on a brownfield site. The design features innovation in each of the six LEED™ categories – energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, design process and sustainable sites. In comparison to the baseline building, the LEED police facility will result in the following environmental benefits: electricity reduction of 573,187 kWh/year or 39 per cent; natural gas reduction of 140,535 m3/year or 67per cent; greenhouse gas reduction of 444 tonnes/year or 52 per cent in the form of CO2e; indoor water use reduction of 21,773 m3 or 77 per cent; outdoor water use reduction of 12,007 m3 or 100 per cent; construction waste reduction of 75 per cent; and materials containing VOCs reduction of 50 per cent.
