Description

The Town of Selkirk will install metered public systems for the provision of potable water and sewer treatment within the East Selkirk village area. The system will be connected to the City of Selkirk through the trenchless installation of forcemains under the Red River. The project, based on a feasibility study, addresses the following issues: a population projection of 2,127 residents, including 700+ junior and middle school students without sanitary drinking water; domestic sewage waste contaminating the aquifer with fecal coliform and e.coli bacterium; use of contaminated water by consumers who may not choose or cannot afford bottled water; increased aquifer contamination through groundwater runoff volumes attributed to recreational and landscape maintenance water uses; a 10-year-old boil water advisory inhibiting the City’s growth and resulting in economic loss; and, restricted fire protection ability. The water distribution system will improve the quality of the system, which is currently serviced by inadequate wells that do not meet the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines. It could also reduce overall water consumption.
