Description

Quebec City will conduct a study to determine the environmental, economic and technical feasibility of using raw water (non-potable water) for ornamental plant watering and street cleaning, as these uses contribute to the increase in potable water demand in the summer. The working committee will begin by developing an inventory of available raw water sources and an estimate of the water volume required in each borough. These will be followed by technical (geographical distribution of sources, water collection methods) and economic (implementation and operation costs) analyses to rate the potential initiatives according to their efficiency in terms of drinking water consumption and profitability. Finally, the City will divulge the results of this study and promote the use of raw water. The City estimates that the study will result in a 20% reduction in drinking water consumption, and in turn to a proportionate reduction in power reduction at the water treatment plant, and in chemicals and power used in drinking water treatment and distribution. It also expects that the collection of rainwater as a source of raw water will reduce the quantity of rainwater entering the sewer system.
