Description
The Town of Whitby will develop a Sustainable Community Plan (SCP) for Port Whitby, focusing on specific harbour development areas that encompass brownfield lands, waterfront areas and the Whitby Go Station. The SCP will focus on rehabilitating and revitalizing Port Whitby and, more generally, on helping the town cope with increased growth and develop Port Whitby in a sustainable manner. The town will hold a project open house to provide local landowners and the public with an overview of the project, and will consult several key organizations and governing bodies. The project team will establish a community profile, review best practices in comparable communities, and establish guiding principles for planning based on community input. The team will prepare a Concept Development Plan and analyze the technical and financial feasibility of alternative energy sources and sustainable infrastructure. Once recommendations are prepared, a second project open house will be held for landowners and the public before the team prepares the final report.Implementation of the Sustainable Community Plan will likely result in an 80 per cent reduction in waste, a 20 to 30 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, and a 15 to 30 per cent reduction in water consumption. Implementation of the plan will provide community benefits through residential development and employment and recreational opportunities.
