Description

The City of Airdrie will develop an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) to achieve a strategic and sustainable approach to growth through an integrated systems approach to planning.Airdrie will use The Natural Step Framework as a guideline to ensure that it addresses the key systems necessary to move the community toward sustainability in an integrated way. The project team will build capacity among city staff, compile information on past initiatives, consult community partners, recruit and train a Community Advisory Group and develop an ICSP process and governance plan. The next step will be to create a shared understanding and vision of sustainable community success. The city will establish task forces to identify and analyze key strategic areas, prepare strategy area action plans, and then finalize and implement the ICSP. The project team will also develop a monitoring and evaluation plan.Implementation of the ICSP will likely decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent and decrease water use by 30 per cent by 2015. The systems approach can be extended to the larger region, and neighbouring municipalities can work together to solve problems and increase regional sustainability.
