Description

The Town of Halton Hills will extensively renovate and expand the Georgetown Branch Library and Cultural Centre into a 51,000-square-foot, high performance facility designed to achieve LEED Silver certification. The building envelope, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting systems are designed to achieve a minimum energy savings of 61% compared to a Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB) reference building. A key component of the design is a geothermal system, which will supply renewable energy to the HVAC system. Other energy-efficient measures include strategic design to maximize daylight and sun exposure during winter months, energy-efficient lighting fixtures, energy recovery ventilators, and low-flow plumbing fixtures. Reductions in energy and water use will result in lower operating costs and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The facility will improve accessibility to a wide variety of educational, artistic and cultural services for Halton Hills’ growing population. The project also demonstrates the town’s commitment to sustainability through its 2008 Green Plan, which sets a LEED standard for all new capital projects.
