City of Edmonton Contaminated Gas Stations Redevelopment Action Plan

The City of Edmonton will develop a brownfield action plan targeting the city’s former gas station sites to achieve its long-term goals of supporting neighbourhood revitalization, promoting high-density development to limit urban sprawl, and restoring land, water and air quality. Building on the municipally-approved Contaminated Gas Station Task Force Strategy, the city will inventory target brownfield sites, identify priority sites and outline legislative and policy options to promote brownfield remediation and redevelopment. The city will use Smart Growth principles as criteria for grant and RFP awards, in order to select projects that incorporate mixed use development, renewable technology, energy efficiency, water conservation and re-use, waste reduction, sustainable transportation, green space and neighbourhood identity. The plan will also define sustainability indicators and monitoring requirements to measure the environmental impacts of redevelopment projects. The plan will be guided by a task force composed of five councillors and supported by a cross-departmental administrative team, including a designated Brownfield Coordinator. The city will take an active role in consulting with property owners and developers, as well as the public and community stakeholders. The action plan will be developed in accordance with Edmonton’s official municipal strategy, which addresses the need for brownfield redevelopment to help ensure quality of life, healthy communities, economic diversity, environmental responsibility and vibrant neighbourhoods. While the focus of this action plan will be former gas stations, it is expected to provide a useful blueprint for redeveloping a wide range of brownfield sites in the city.
