Description

Following the Montréal Summit of 2002, the City of Montréal prepared its First Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development in the Community of Montréal. The City is receiving funding to implement five of the 24 actions identified in the Plan. These are: (1) Develop and implement a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction plan; (2) Implement the collection of multiple waste streams in municipal buildings and one large City park (3) Create an information sharing network about sustainable development between stakeholders; (4) Implement an environmental management system (EMS) within the Environment Division; and (5) Provide ecological management of parks. The plan estimates the net impacts of the six actions to include a 20 per cent greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and a 10 per cent reduction in smog days (from 64 days in 2003 to 58); a 30 per cent reduction in landfilled waste from municipal buildings; a 30 per cent reduction in landfilled waste; a 15 per cent reduction in energy consumption; and a 15 per cent reduction in paper and water consumption.
