Description

The goal of this project is to develop an energy management plan for the Medical and Related Sciences (MaRS) Discovery District in the downtown core of the City of Toronto. The District comprises eight teaching hospitals, the University of Toronto, and the MaRS facility, a centre aimed at bringing together the business, science and financial communities to accelerate commercialization of new ideas and technologies. It is the fourth largest biotechnology cluster in North America and currently a high energy user. Achieving lower energy costs will encourage companies to re-locate to this world-class biomedical and research hub. Implementation of a MaRS District Energy Management Plan will support significant reductions in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for approximately 20 facilities; plan for future energy efficiencies and reductions in water use, and; increase awareness within the biomedical/biotechnology community of the need to employ energy-efficient technologies in building construction. Project scope includes: energy and water data collection for the District; an energy savings and generation audit, and; development of a plan to integrate existing buildings and potential new construction within a holistic, synergistic district energy management system.
