Description

The City of Saskatoon Transit Branch will purchase four 40-foot, low-floor hybrid (diesel-electric) buses. The City has negotiated a four-year contract with its supplier to order from three to 11 buses per year. In addition, the City will install its first Transit Signal Priority System on the College Drive corridor, the most challenging and strategic section of its transit system. Transit Signal Priority is part of the City’s strategic plan to improve frequency and reliability, and to retain and attract new ridership. Both projects flow from the 2006 Saskatoon Transit Long-Term Strategic Plan, a comprehensive strategy to improve transit service, increase ridership by 5 percent, and meet its environmental objectives to reduce corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 10 percent below 1990 levels by 2013, and community GHG emissions by 6 percent below 1990 levels by 2013. The City estimates that the four new hybrid buses will reduce fuel consumption by 34,200 liters per year to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 93 tonnes or 20 - 30 percent, and lower operating costs. In addition, it is estimated that the new BRT system will result in ridership growth, better routes and improved scheduling.
