Description
The City of Edmonton’s mobile equipment services branch will develop a Sustainable Fleet Management Plan (SFMP) to link its ISO 14001 environmental management framework to the city’s other sustainability plans and policies. As a first step, the project team will identify internal and external stakeholders who will help to guide the process. The stakeholder advisory committee will include alternative fuel experts. The project team will conduct a literature review and interviews with fleet leaders from other municipalities and produce a “lessons-learned” modelling report. The team will also assess the baseline characteristics of the municipal fleet and review current purchasing, maintenance and disposal policies. To limit the fleet’s environmental impact, the SFMP will explore alternative fuel technologies, aftermarket vehicle improvements and ways to reduce the use of the fleet. It will also incorporate performance measures that will be updated annually. The implementation of the SFMP will reduce the roughly 80,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases the municipal fleet produces annually to an estimated 23,000 tonnes. Over time the plan will also improve local air quality and limit the quantity of hazardous waste produced through municipal operations.
