Description
The City of Grand Forks will install a heat exchange system to draw heat from raw wastewater effluent to heat washrooms constructed next to the lift station. The field test will optimize the equipment to provide maximum heat exchange and will evaluate how to adapt this to heating washroom facilities. This is a unique approach that applies current heat exchange system technology to raw municipal wastewater to provide heat. If successful, the city will consider using the technology to heat larger municipal facilities. Small city buildings, such as a washroom structure, can emit an estimated 2.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas per year. With a raw water heat recovery process in place, total emissions for a similar building will be 0.63 tonnes per year.
