Description

The City of Edmonton will remediate 10 hectares of a 56 hectare brownfield. The current site has been used as a shooting range since it was developed for the 1978 Commonwealth Games. Although the lead contamination extends up to 1.2 metres into the soil in some spots, testing indicates that the local groundwater is not contaminated. There are approximately 23,000 m³ of unacceptable contaminated ground and berm materials. Among these, some 6,000 m³ are considered hazardous waste. Proposed methods of site remediation include removal and transportation of the contaminated soil to an approved landfill, washing and screening contaminated soil, recycling captured lead, and stabilizing contaminated soils to reuse them as backfill. Remediation work will start in the spring of 2007 with completion anticipated in the fall of 2007. Redevelopment of the site will commence upon clean up and is scheduled for completion by 2011. The site will then become a world-class outdoor multi-use facility for soccer, rugby and slo-pitch tournaments.
