Description

University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation 2.0 (UWCRC 2.0 Inc.) is a non-profit developer legally distinct from the University of Winnipeg. UWCRC 2.0 currently owns student housing in the city and two mixed-income projects for the community totalling approximately 367 units. This initiative will add 194 units to the provider’s portfolio. Building on a planning grant funded by FCM (GMF 17534), this initiative assesses the feasibility of using several energy-efficient technologies to reach a minimum net-TEUI of 80kWh/m2. Efficiency technologies under consideration include a four-pipe fan coil with condensing gas boiler and heat recovery ventilation, the latter of which was identified in their planning grant as the best performing system for their context. Additionally, the applicant is considering a well-insulated envelope, optimized fenestration, and high efficiency heat pumps and lighting. More precisely, the SAH Study Grant supports UWCRC 2.0 in hiring an engineering firm to complete a detailed energy model, develop a net-zero energy ready strategy, conduct a life-cycle cost assessment, and oversee a schematic design of the mechanical and electrical systems. Results from this study will allow the applicant to access additional funding for the subsequent capital project. Innovative aspect(s): The applicant is targeting a high level of barrier-free units, exceeding conventional practice. Replicability: The energy model will inform two other affordable mixed-income projects in the applicant’s portfolio with the goal of increasing their energy efficiency.
