Description

The County’s Public Works Department will determine the feasibility of developing a landfill gas project at the Sarnia Landfill Site, which operated until 1999 when it was closed and capped. The study will involve a review of historical landfill data, assessment of the composition and quantity of landfill gas, a field survey of landfill conditions, landfill gas sampling, identification of alternatives, identification of a preferred option and its expected lifespan. The County will then invite private corporations to bid on developing a landfill gas utilization project. The reduction in direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions could be between 84,000 and 112,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) annually. Additionally, the potential electrical energy generated from this fuel could be as much as 1,500 kilowatts (kW) per year. With the annual production of 1,500 kW of electrical energy, the indirect GHG emissions associated with the proposed project, due to avoided electrical generation, are estimated to be 6,400 tonnes of CO2e annually. Other benefits include reduction in other contaminant emissions; health benefits from improved air quality; reduction or elimination of nuisance odours; post closure opportunities for the Site and its adjacent properties which could include rezoning and residential/commercial/industrial development; and, community economic development.
