Description

The Saskatoon Waste Management Centre (WMC) has been operating as a municipal landfill since 1955 and at current waste volume has a remaining capacity of five to six years. It is estimated that the development of a construction and demolition (C&D) materials handling facility at an alternate site would extend the lifespan of the existing City landfill by over seven additional years through the diversion of one third of the current waste stream. C&D waste is a significant portion of the waste stream that can be processed and used locally. Materials received at the C&D facility would be sorted, stockpiled, processed and recycled. It is estimated that less than 2 per cent of the waste received at the facility would require landfill disposal. Already local markets for 12,000 tonnes of recycled C&D material have been identified that would result in annual revenue of $400,000. Project deliverables include a report documenting all key assumptions, environmental concerns, issues, staging, cost estimates and a preliminary site plan for the Centre.
