Description

The City’s new water treatment plant will utilize innovative membrane technology to produce very high quality water. Itwill reduce turbidity to acceptable levels and will remove 99.99 per cent of water borne organisms, including giardia andcryptosporidium. In addition, it will be built as an integrated green building to LEED Gold standards. The City iscommitted to reduce the total plant energy consumption by at least 35 per cent with a reduction of energy consumptionby the heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems of at least 50 per cent. Central to the project is the creation of anaturalized landscape incorporating a constructed wetland with native plants; site soil conservation, on-site storm watermanagement and the use of rejected treatment process water for irrigation and riparian restoration. Interpretive andeducational elements will communicate the message of environmental sustainability. A concept plan is being preparedfor the development of an educational interpretation centre to explore ecosystem linkages through a hands-on learningenvironment. In addition, the University College of the Caribou and Zenon Environmental Ltd. have partnered with theCity of Kamloops to create a “Centre for Excellence” for water treatment and membrane filtration technology.
