Description

The Toronto Zoo operated by the City of Toronto is considering an innovative and environmentally friendly way todispose of the animal wastes generated by the inhabitants. With its GMEF funding, it will investigate the feasibility ofbiodigesting the animal wastes in enclosed digesters to collect bioenergy in the form of methane, and then using thenutrients in the sludge residue for the various pavilions and horticultural areas. The digester off–gas will contain about 65per cent methane and can be readily used in electric power generation with heat as a byproduct. The project could thuscombine both biodigestion with combined heat and power cogeneration. The zoo could use both products and benefitsignificantly in cost savings from both forms of energy. The project could eliminate greenhouse gas emissions.
