Description
The City of Port Colborne will conduct a comprehensive Brownfield Remediation and Redevelopment Strategy and Community Improvement Plan (CIP) with the support of the Regional Municipality of Niagara. The strategy will provide a framework for the remediation, rehabilitation and redevelopment of approximately two dozen brownfield sites. The City will establish a multi-disciplinary Brownfield Development Task Force (BDTF) to oversee the project. A number of activities will be undertaken, including the preparation of a brownfield inventory; brownfield mapping, selection of the top 10 sites; recommendation of redevelopment strategies, and development of a draft brownfield redevelopment strategy. Although it is difficult to quantify total specific environmental benefits until the priority brownfield sites are identified, their level of contamination is assessed, and the remediation approach is determined, over time the City expects to remediate and redevelop numerous properties, reducing their soil and groundwater contaminants to below Ministry of Environment standards.
