Description

This study will focus on ways to reduce the odour nuisance and risks that affect Boisbriand’s wastewater treatment plant as a result of doubling of wastewater volume and sludge in the past 15 years. The situation is projected to worsen due to continuing development of the City’s industrial park. Trickling filters have been identified as the weak link in the treatment process. They are vulnerable to blockage by surcharges of organic matter from food processing industries and once blocked are impossible to change. In order to decrease load on the wastewater treatment plant, Boisbriand will consult with industry, businesses and the general population on ways to reduce or eliminate pollutants at source. In addition, the study will provide data to improve upon a February 2004 discharge regulation and will update staff training for equipment operation in the treatment plant and the wastewater pump stations. Boisbriand estimates that hydrogen sulphide will be reduced by 50 to 75 parts per million per cubic metre, biochemical oxygen demand over five days by 250 kilograms (kg/d), suspended solids (SS) by 250 kg/d and chemical oxygen demand by 500 kg/d.
