Description

The City of Port Alberni will investigate the site of the former Alberni Plywood industrial property — shown by previous investigations to contain localized contamination — to identify and measure the costs and risks associated with redevelopment and to determine the requirements for remedial action. The city’s consultants will use innovative technologies such as ultraviolet-induced fluorescence to measure hydrocarbon concentrations in situ and will field test a new high-temperature thermal desorption remediation technique. Successful remediation of the site will result in verifiable reductions in soil and groundwater contamination in an important waterfront area, consistent with the goals of the city’s sustainable community plan. It will also stimulate greater tax and business revenues for the city and generate long-term potential growth.
