Description

In order to prevent the creation of a landfill site on its territory and to reduce the quantity of residual matter (RM) for burial as well as the transportation of this matter to landfill sites, the City of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield proposes to field test a gasification technology that would transform into a combustible a large range of household, industrial, commercial and institutional waste produced in the municipality and in the MRC of Beauharnois-Salaberry. Global Clean Energy Inc. developed this technology and wishes to demonstrate it in the municipal field. In order to carry out preliminary testing, two gasification units will be built by Cascades; one with a capacity of one metric ton per day will be installed in a municipal building and the other with a capacity of one kg per day will be put up in Concordia University labs for parallel testing. Life-cycle analysis will be used for assessing economic and technical sustainability and the possible options; this analysis will focus on the entire project aimed at reducing burial of residual matter in the municipality. This will include analyzing the supply, the true potential for reducing landfill burial and the quality of products generated by gasification in the municipal operations. The final objective is to build a system that is capable of transforming 50,000 metric tons of RM per year into a combustible that can be used for certain municipal operations and attain a minimum waste reclamation rate of 60% as compared to 18% in 2008. Treatment in the gasifier significantly reduces the volume of RM for burial and produces inert substrate. The Municipality would thus be able to reduce the amount of waste sent for landfilling, reduce waste management associated costs, locally generate a useful source of energy while creating potential revenue for the City and creating a number of jobs.
