Description
The Régie d’assainissement des eaux de Terrebonne-Mascouche (RAETM) will execute a pilot project aimed at computerizing management of septic tank sludge with a view to implementing such a system throughout the municipality. This approach will allow the City to monitor and characterize septic installations in order to minimize their negative effects on the environment. The project objective is to develop and test a computerized management system for septic tank sludge that will allow municipal managers to learn where there are septic tanks on the City’s territory and determine if they comply with applicable standards, to plan collection routes, to monitor collections in real time and determine the volume collected and treated at the septic tank sludge treatment centre. This approach will also allow municipalities and their residents to reduce costs.
Non-compliance of certain septic tanks is a source of soil and hydrographical network pollution and the unorganized, random collection of septic tank sludge constitutes a waste of energy. This waste results in an increase in greenhouse gas of between 10 and 20 percent as compared to a systematic collection as proposed in this project. Software that will be developed may easily be adapted by other municipalities wishing to implement a sounder management of septic installations on their territory.
