Description
Bifano Dairy Farms and the Regional District of North Okanagan (NORD) will study and pilot test an anaerobic digesterto process combined agricultural, municipal and industrial organic wastes. The digester would produce methane to beburned in an electrical generation or combined heat and power (CHP) cogeneration facility. Internal and externalcombustion engines and microturbines will be considered. Several associated technologies that could complimentdigestion in regional waste management facilities will be studied, such as, combustion and alkaline hydrolysis andpasteurization or ultra violet (UV) technologies, along with gasification, pyrolysis and thermal depolymerisation. In thepilot project phase, an anaerobic digestion facility will be constructed to process approximately 100 tonnes per day ofmixed organic waste, leading to an estimated reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) by approximately50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year. In a commercial plant phase, the facility would have thecapacity to generate approximately 8,500 megawatts (MW) of electricity per year and an additional 22,000 gigajoules(GJ) of thermal energy, resulting in an estimated reduction of GHG emissions by approximately 250,000 tonnes of CO2eper year. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) would be reduced by 80 to 90 per cent, with sludge production decreased by a minimum of 25 per cent. In addition, there would be a 35 per cent decrease intotal solid organic waste landfilled.
