Description

The City of Saint John is developing an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP): Vision 2015, to enable the City to lead the nation as an example of a sustainable community. The City expects that the plan will allow the City to align its services with its community vision and embark on the process of continuous improvement. Dialogue through community consultation is a key foundation of this planning process. Already through the visioning component of Vision 2015, the community has voiced over 15,000 opinions and ideas on the future of the City. Another key foundation is taking a systems approach to the planning and implementation processes, by encouraging inter- and intra-organizational communication and acknowledging that an improvement in one area of a system may impact positively or negatively on another area of the system. Finally, the City is taking a sustainable approach to decision making, accounting for all resources - economic, social and environmental – and recognizing full costs of decisions in a way that supports financial, environmental and community well-being over the long term.
