Description
The City of Guelph is experiencing rapid growth rates beyond projections in current planning strategies. As a result, the City will use this study to develop a Local Growth Management Plan (LGMS) that will implement a new planning framework based on current and projected growth rates. The LGMS will address potential environmental impacts using a holistic systems approach to growth management. The City will conduct alternative growth management scenario analysis using the MetroQuest software tool to show long-term outcomes of different choices based on an examination of a wide range of indicators including land use, housing, population, economic growth, public and private transportation, and resource management. The City estimates that as a result of the LGMS, it will meet the Partners for Climate Protection goals of a 20 per cent reduction in corporate, and six per cent reduction in community GHG emissions from 1994 baseline by 2010. It also anticipates a 100 per cent increase in transit ridership, a 20 per cent reduction in water use, and a 40 per cent increase in urban intensification and infill development. The City expects a multitude of additional environmental benefits, as well, including an increase in solid waste diversion and improvements to natural areas.
