Description

In a tri-party partnership, the City of London, London Public Library and YMCA of Western Ontario will build the 6,689-square-metre London Recreation Centre and Library, a structure expected to meet LEED Gold certification guidelines. Environmental technologies that will be used in the building include a green roof, permeable paving surfaces and rain gardens to manage and collect stormwater; a greywater cistern and other water-saving features such as dual-flush toilets, ultralow-flow shower heads and automated taps; and energy-efficient heating, cooling, and lighting technologies, with use of natural lighting throughout. The possible use of geothermal heating and cooling with solar thermal assist is being considered. Construction will aim to use local materials, protect surrounding open space and install naturalized landscaping requiring no irrigation. Overall energy savings compared with an equivalent building under the Model National Energy Code for Buildings are forecast to be 61.5 per cent. This multipurpose space, with its combination of fitness facilities, library, community rooms, and daycare is intended to inspire social and physical activity for the northeastern London community. Its demonstration of LEED building principles will also inspire future commercial and institutional building developments in London by its inclusion in regular London green building tours.
