Description

This feasibility study builds on an earlier study recommendation to examine further options for methane gas utilization at the City of Regina’s wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The options are: clean-up the gas and either fully utilize it as fuel in existing boilers, together with the addition of micro-turbines to generate electricity, or use it as a fuel in reciprocating engines and micro-turbines to generate both heat and electricity. The study will evaluate the economic feasibility of both approaches and develop a technical database to facilitate design for the best option. It will assess options with respect to process and equipment, capital and operating costs, greenhouse gas emission reductions, carbon credits and energy savings. The option chosen will meet current needs and incorporate flexibility, expandability and functional integration into the existing operations of the WWTP. It is estimated that implementation of the project will result in a reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases of approximately 30 per cent to 50 per cent.
