Description
The Village of Lions Bay’s Master Water Plan (2006; GMF 7000) recommended undertaking a Water Loss Study as it was estimated that up to 60% of the Village’s water may be lost to leakage. The objective of this field test is to locate watermain or service leaks that can be repaired to reduce water consumption. A series of flow meters will be installed on the Village's watermains, at strategic locations, to measure and record water usage during night-time periods and to identify street locations where large amounts of water are lost. Leaks identified through the study will be repaired in conjunction with extensive road work. Overall water consumption levels would then be reduced to the point that it would be on par with Vancouver and West Vancouver (584 litres per capita per day). Water consumption would be further reduced through demand side management programs, possibly in conjunction with water recycling. The major environmental benefits of the eventual capital works are: reduced draw from creeks (water use reduced by 257 million litres per year); reduced chlorine consumption for water treatment (chlorine use reduced by 300 kg/year); reduced water consumption would result in reduced energy consumption for future UV treatment (GHG emissions reduced by 2,697 kg CO2/year).
