Description
The City of Sault Ste. Marie owns and operates a landfill to which almost all the City's organic waste is sent. It has only10 years remaining capacity. Currently, the city diverts only 7 per cent of the waste stream from landfill. With its GMEFfunding, Sault Ste. Marie will undertake a pilot project to collect organic waste from 800 households and co–compost itwith sewage sludge from two municipal wastewater treatment facilities. This sewage sludge is currently being disposedof in the municipal landfill. The project will determine the feasibility of co–composting the sewage sludge with municipalorganic waste to produce a Class A compost, which is easily marketable. If the feasibility study is successful, Sault Ste.Marie will proceed with the construction of a facility that is expected to divert 75 per cent of all of the organic wastegenerated by the City.
